Beginning in year 1698, Adeline Larue grows up in Villon-sur-Sarthe, France from a humble family living a simple life for the summer. Sheltered by her provincial life, Addie yearned to discover more, far from their village, and escape the future planned for her. In an attempt to avoid an unwanted marriage, she bargains with a dark god to change her fate and attain the freedom she dreams of. She had yet to learn that dealing with this lord— a lord that answered after dark— would have repercussions of the worst kind. Given immortality yet doomed to be forgotten by everyone she meets, Adeline lives through eras with the challenge of getting by everyday without being able to form attachments or relationships with any person she encounters. Exploring Europe in the 1800-1900s and eventually reaching New York City in the modern day, Addie's story jumps from one setting and time frame to emphasize her hundred years of journey.

One of the greatest strengths of V.E. Schwab's story is within her writing style itself: descriptive, free-flowing, and real. As one of the most detail-oriented fictions from my experience, anyone who reads this cannot help but be encapsulated in each situation Addie finds herself in. V.E. Schwab's diction is simple yet evocative of such deep feelings that will surely affect readers and give them a memorable reading experience.
“I am stronger than your god and older than your devil. I am the darkness between stars, and the roots beneath the earth. I am promise, and potential, and when it comes to playing games, I divine the rules, I set the pieces, and I choose when to play.”
The foundation of Schwab's characters stays minted throughout the novel due to her complete and thorough explanations of even the smallest nuances of each actor. One particular character, whom one would consider to be the antagonist of the story, may be difficult to comprehend as he is non-human. Yet through illustrating his motives not fully but rightly so, he makes for the most interesting/intriguing force in the story. The resolution to this novel, which highly revolves around deals made with this dark lord, will leave you unexplainably feeling.

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue manages to accomplish such prestige with its narrative, personally making me feel like I have been a part of Addie's life and legacy. I give this novel a 5-star rating and recommend it to young adult readers looking for a sentimental and memorable story to ponder on for a very long time.
